Benbow Environmental (formerly known as Dick Benbow and Associates) facilitated a Cleaner Production project for a cluster of businesses in the NSW Poultry Industry. At the recent Recognition lunch for the NSW Government's $5M program being run by the NSW EPA (now DEC), the group was awarded Highly Recommended for "Best Industry Cluster". Benbow Environmental were selected for the 'Profiting from Cleaner Production Industry Partnership Program' which commenced in August 2004 for our proposed Poultry Industry Cluster. The program had significant funding from the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and a substantial in-kind contribution from Benbow Environmental and the industry participants.
The poultry industry have been very keen to improve their business sustainability and approximately 92% of NSW's poultry processors were involved in our program, including Baiada Poultry, Red Lea Chickens, Bartter Enterprises, Cordina Chicken Farms, Summertime Chickens and Inghams Enterprises. This achievement is a real credit to the industry who realise the benefits of working together to generate solutions to some of the environmental and cost issues facing their industry. The program is nearing completion with participants currently implementing cleaner production initiatives and generating further improvement options.
